23″ LED Northpole Lights Off Road Mounting Lights

Here is a segment that we have yet to get into, LED light bars that can attach to your truck, ATV, Snowmobile, or pretty much any type of off road vehicle. This specific light is a 23” LED light bar  by the company Northpole Lights. These lights are a 144W waterproof cree spot-flood combo LED light bar specifically made for mounting on off road vehicles.

Since we are not major car experts, we thought it would be a better review to go to our trusted car experts at Friendly Ford. We go to them for anything we need with our cars and they have become a trusted friend who we can rely on honesty work and feedback. I met up with one of the mechanics there and he was nice enough to install the light bar for me while giving me his expert opinion on the lights.

Tools Required

  • Flashlight
  • Tape measure
  • Market crayon
  • 10mm socket
  • 14mm socket
  • 13mm wrench
  • Electrical wire cutters
  • #6 Allen key
  • Right angle drill
  • 5/16 drill bit

Things we did not like:

When we installed the light bar there were a few thing we saw that needed some minor and major improvement. These areas were what kept the lights from getting a perfect 5 star rating.

  • Mounting brackets are flimsy, you can bend them with one hand and seems like they start turning white when you are working with them
  • When installing the wires we noticed there was not enough wire coming off the light to run it anywhere.
  • There is no additional wiring or relays/fuses/switches included to finish install
  • Because the wires were so short we were unable to install the lights where we wanted. We had to install the light at the very top of the mount to make it fit, only 2 of the 4 bolts line up. (They seem to hold tight however)
  • No instructions, no specs (what size fuse suggested, how many amps light pulls). Is someone who was not a mechanic or has knowledge of cars/electrical engineering, then this could cause major problems.

Things we like:

  • Overall easy install if not in a tight place
  • Light is very bright, a lot brighter than we expected
  • Seems to be priced economical and uses the same LED lights as a lot of the higher priced lights

Things to look at in future:

While we installed this we did see a few things that you should keep in mind and look for after a few months of having it installed and after you have the weather change. Since we live in Chicago and we have the worst winters, it will be interesting to see how it holds up along with:

  • Will the plastic in front of lights hold up to road hazards (rocks being thrown up) and will the lights themselves spider crack lens?
  • Will it hold out moisture?
  • Will the black on the housing stay on through winter/road hazards?

Final Thoughts:

Overall, the light quality and brightness of the Northpole Lights are good from what we see now. What the Friendly Ford mechanic and I are looking forward to is if in 6-8 months of daily driving and different weather conditions, how it will hold up. Because there were a few minor things that we found as negatives, we didn’t give this a perfect start rating, but it they fixed a few of our concerns then we think this would easily get a 5 star rating.
